What a surprise (not). The New England Patriots had a chance to show the world that they are the real deal by beating a playoff team in the Rams and they couldn’t do it. I said last week that the Pats beating the three win Chargers 45-0 didn’t prove anything but some fans still wanted to tell me that I was hating on the team.
I wasn’t. It is clear after Thursday night’s loss that I was just stating facts.
New England was losing 17-0 just 16 minutes into the game after Jared Goff converted on fourth and goal in Los Angeles’ first drive and then Cam Newton threw a pick six right into a defender’s hands. To make matters worse, in the second quarter Newton tried to go for it on fourth down and got stuffed.
The Patriots are still a winning organization but it was obvious that they were not the Patriots of old, and this team was going to struggle more than they had in decades. And this loss to the Rams proved the Patriots season is over (in terms of their playoff chances). At least there’s the Celtics to look forward to in the future.
