Malcolm Butler Is Officially Out For The Season

This one hurts quite a bit. It was announced on Tuesday afternoon that the New England Patriots are placing CB Malcolm Butler on the IR. The reason for his placement on the IR is due to an undisclosed injury. This ultimately means that Butler’s season is over.

It is unknown how or when exactly this injury occurred. Obviously it being undisclosed makes it naturally difficult to determine exactly what happened. It’s very possible Butler could have been injured during Thursday’s preseason game.

Butler played in 23 snaps during New England’s preseason opener against the New York Giants. His big highlight from that game was of course this fumble recovery in the second quarter.

Regardless of how it happened, it’s very upsetting to see. The 32 year old Butler had just returned to New England this offseason after leaving the team in 2018.

Expectations weren’t the highest for Butler during this Patriots comeback. There was legitimate doubt if he could even make the team. Butler isn’t getting any younger. More importantly, he is coming off dissapointing spells in both Tennessee and Arizona.

Despite his declining stardom, Butler will always have a special place in the hearts of Pats fans. It’s for that very reason many were excited to see him return to the team. Butler’s heroic interception against Seattle in Super Bowl 49 is one of the most iconic moments in NFL history. It will absolutely live on forever, especially in New England.

It’s uncertain what the future holds for Butler, but hopefully his time in the league doesn’t end here. The hero that helped bring home New England’s fourth Lombardi Trophy deserves a much better ending to his story than this.
