Almost everyone thinks about the Boston Celtics success and immediately jumps to Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. The undercover success story is the three headed monster at guard.
Marcus Smart, Derrick White and Malcolm Brogdon all have similarities. However, each one of them can impact the game in many different ways. Unique in what they do, but all willing to do what it takes to win.
Making a Necessary Splash
Last trade deadline, Brad Stevens made a huge deal landing White from the San Antonio Spurs. The impact he brought with was noticeably right as he made his Celtics debut.
From the energy on the defensive end, to the timely shot making, he looked like the missing piece for this team. They came up short in the Finals and there was still something missing that could take this team over the top.
Trader Brad Does it Again
Brad striked again this offseason, landing a deal with the Pacers for Malcolm without giving up a core piece. The fit has been as close to perfect as it could be.
Not only adding a 50-40-90 guy, but an unselfish teammate who was willing to come off the bench. So far, these two have played a huge role in the Celtics 21-5 start to the season.
Efficiency of the Guards
Something that has hurt the Celtics in the past is the bench and the lack of having a “true point guard”. Those two voids have been filled without a doubt. Smart has absolutely proven that he is more than capable of being this teams true point guard while bringing it on the defensive end.
His willingness to distribute and put the Jays in situations to get touches has been crucial. Simpler terms, Marcus will be Marcus, love and trusted by all.
There isn’t much more you could ask for from three guards on a roster. Smart has averaged 12.1 points and 7.6 assists on 45% shooting on the year. White is sitting on 10.8 points, 3 rebounds and 3.3 assists on 47% shooting. Last but definitely not least, Brogdon averaging 14 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists on 49% from the three.
Depth in the Backcourt
You don’t miss a beat with these three. The fact that any of them can be on the court and set a teammate up, knock down a jump shot or get a stop on the defensive end will be the difference for this team.
One thing surprising is how successful they have been on the floor together. That all boils down to making sacrifices and doing what it takes to win basketball games.
Without a doubt, Jaylen and Jayson are the stars and their names will always be at the top of the box score. But the simple fact is that these guards are crucial to their success. Some teams lack the depth at the guard position which is why Celtics fans should be grateful. Love, trust and appreciate the guards of the Boston Celtics.
