Over this past offseason, the Celtics made a huge splash via trade. Boston struck a deal with the Indiana Pacers centered around former Rookie of the Year Malcolm Brogdon. The deal garnered a lot of praise from around the league. He was considered by far the biggest Celtics off-season acquirement.
The question is though, just how well is it turning out?
To put it simply, the deal is working out great for Boston thus far. The trade, which saw Daniel Theis, Aaron Nesmith, Juwan Morgan, Malik Fitts, Nik Stauskas, and a 2023 First Round Pick go to Indiana in exchange for Brogdon, is looking like a steal for the Celtics.
Through the first 23 games of the season, Malcolm Brogdon is averaging 13.9 points per game. He’s also leading the league in 3 Point percentage, shooting an unbelievable 49.4% from deep.
Not only is he shooting the ball extremely well, he’s also sharing the ball and rebounding outstandingly well. Brogdon is averaging nearly 4 assist and over 4 rebounds a game, doing all this off the bench in 23 minutes per game.
Brogdon was exactly what the Celtics were hoping to acquire over the off-season. Despite the post-season success the Celtics had last year, it was very obvious they they needed to add a scorer off the bench.
Not only has Brogdon been phenomenal scoring the ball, but his experience in the NBA really shows. Whether it be it in late shot-clock situations, or just providing a leader for the bench group, Brogdon has delivered. He’s also been great playing key minutes with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
To say this trade was a great move by Brad Stevens would be an understatment. Up to this point of the season, this trade has worked out in every single way the Celtics were to ever hope for.
This is especially true with Brogdon being an early season candidate for Sixth Man of the Year. As Celtics fans, we can only hope for the rest of season to bring the same success. Not only for Brogdon himself, but for the Celtics as well, who have jumped out to an outstanding 20-5 record to start the season.
The Celtics look to continue their dominance over the next week as they are on the road against some tough opponents. That includes last year’s NBA Champion Golden State Warriors.
That game takes place on Saturday December 10th, with the Celtics looking for a little revenge over last year’s Finals loss. Before that, Boston takes on the first place Phoenix Suns on December 7th, a game you won’t want to miss.
