Making the Case For Odell Beckham Jr. to New England

Cam Newton throwing touchdowns to Odell Beckham Jr. in New England? It could happen this season.

According to legendary New York sports talk radio personality Mike Francesca, the Cleveland Browns are looking to trade their Pro Bowl receiver after a 32 point Week 1 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

While Beckham is focused on trying to beat the Bengals in their Week 2 match-up vs the Cincinnati Bengals, it is an intriguing scenario for fans to dream about. After all, the Patriots are probably the best landing spot for his services.

First off, the New England Patriots need wide receiver help if they want to reach the playoffs. Julian Edelman and N’Keal Harry are Cam Newton’s only real weapons and they only combined for 96 receiving yards in their Week 1 win over Miami.

Bill Belichick also has history of signing high drama receivers and it tends to work out pretty well. He went out and got Randy Moss and it led to great success. He signed Antonio Brown and it went well for the week or so that he was in New England–he helped them win a game in Miami–but Antonio Brown got in his own way. Cam Newton has been a success so far although it is early and we know the baggage he comes with (big personality with his over the top post-game attire).

Adding a Pro Bowl receiver like Beckham would not only give Newton a big time receiver, but it also means opposing defenses would have their focus on Beckham, which would open up more running opportunities for Newton and more receiving chances for Edelman.

Odell Beckham Jr. would be another one of those high drama players but we all know the talent that he possesses, but it has been wasted so far with the New York Giants and the Cleveland Browns.

There are early signs that a Belichick-Beckham tandem would work, as the 27-year-old has nothing but good things to say about him.

“He’s a coach that I’ve looked at for the longest time” Beckham said in 2018. “He’s just a guy who I have nothing but love for him. So the conversation’s cool, just to be able to sit and listen to one of the greatest coaches of all time — I guess you could say that for sure — it’s fine to be able to have those kind of convos with him.”

The Patriots attempted to acquire Beckham in 2018 and he was “ready” to move to Foxborough, so will they try again? They should.
